Barcelona defender Gerard Pique may have got a little too wrapped in the club’s celebrations after their thrilling Super Cup win over Sevilla on Tuesday, as he was heard encouraging his team-mates to unashamedly rub the triumph in the noses of their great rivals Real Madrid.
That’s according to the El Chiringuito programme (h/t AS) which outlined the expletive-laden words uttered by Pique: “Lets go lads, let’s celebrate it. F–k those from Madrid, let them see us celebrate.”
The piece notes the quotes initially went under the radar with the focus on Pedro, who scored the winning goal, but they’ve subsequently been picked up in the aftermath. As reported, it’s not the first time the World Cup-winning defender has landed himself in hot water when it comes Barca’s eternal enemies.
He stuck the knife in previously earlier this year, thanking rapper Kevin Roldan—who performed at Cristiano Ronaldo’s birthday party in the wake of Real’s 4-0 loss to Atletico Madrid—for helping the Blaugrana clinch the La Liga title. Pique also goaded ex-Los Blancos boss Jose Mourinho by holding up five fingers in the aftermath of Barcelona’s 5-0 win over Real.
Both teams have yet to get their domestic campaign underway, but they have made some intriguing moves in the summer window.
After all, plenty of the defender’s international team-mates herald from the capital, whether they play for Real, Atletico or elsewhere. As such, even in the wake of such a dramatic game, a little more tact from the Blaugrana defender would have done nobody any harm in this instance.
A rivalry is a positive thing, and the dynamic between Real and Barcelona is one of the most encapsulating in sport. But for Pique to be considering the team’s bitterest rivals in moments of elation and celebration reeks of obsession; perhaps a shift in priorities is in order for Spain’s World Cup-winning defender.
